Our Experience: SuperMag Maxi Children’s Magnetic Construction Set

We recently got our hands on the SuperMag Maxi, a fantastic magnetic building set that comes with 66 vibrant pieces. The primary colors – red, green, yellow, blue, and white – make creations pop! This set includes magnetic rods in two different lengths (six large bars and thirty smaller rods) along with thirty shiny metal balls, allowing for stronger and more varied 3D structures.

Playing with the SuperMag Maxi isn’t just about fun; it’s a brilliant way to encourage imagination while simultaneously helping children learn about magnetism and STEM construction concepts. We’ve noticed a significant improvement in Miss P’s coordination and space recognition as she manipulates the pieces. It’s also great for refining fine and gross motor skills.

Children will naturally need to figure out how to support the weight of their designs by strategically connecting the rods. This can be a tricky but rewarding challenge that teaches them a basic understanding of architectural engineering. We even found that our fingerlings could grip onto the structures, allowing us to incorporate other toys into our play and expand the imaginative scenarios!

An Important Safety Note

The manufacturer’s recommended age for these magnetic building sets is three and up. However, from our perspective at Today’s Woman, we recommend SuperMag Magnetic Construction Sets for ages five and up due to the small magnets and metal balls. If you have very young children in the house, please be careful of stray balls and ensure thorough cleanup after playtime. The small balls do pose a choking hazard for younger children.

Safety aside, for older children, SuperMag Magnetic Construction Sets are a truly wonderful option. A large set would make an excellent joint gift, especially if you have multiple children to buy for in one household!

Exploring SuperMag 3D Puzzle Sets: Our Take on the SuperMag 3D Pony

Beyond the classic construction sets, SuperMag also carries a few 3D tridimensional puzzle sets, including a pony, T-rex, truck, house, or castle. These sets combine magnetic rods and balls with colorful inserts, offering children a unique experience of flexibility while building a 3D puzzle.

We tried out the SuperMag 3D Pony. While the finished pony was very stable, we found the instructions to be less than clear. It definitely wasn’t something Miss P was able to do independently without a good deal of help. The flat plastic connector tiles were particularly tricky to snap together; it took two adults and one child a significant amount of time to actually figure out that the tiles were meant to snap together in a specific way. This really should be clearer in the instructions.

While the 3D Pony set is undeniably cute, the SuperMag Maxi set appealed more to Miss 6’s independent play style. Nonetheless, that’s not to say that your child won’t absolutely love any of the delightful 3D tridimensional puzzle sets – every child’s building preference is unique!
