We decided to kick things off for Miss P with a simple experiment from the book: using magnets to discover which objects they attract. Her eyes widened in genuine amazement when she realized a seemingly ordinary bar magnet could effortlessly lift a spoon! It was a small moment, but it sparked a huge wave of curiosity.

However, what truly captivated her imagination was the effect of placing iron filings near the mysterious lodestone. Held just above them, the iron filings sprang to life, leaping up and clinging to the lodestone in intricate patterns, revealing the invisible forces at play. It was as if magic was happening right before her eyes, and that “magic” was pure science.

All in all, Miss P has had a fantastic time exploring the world of magnets and trying out different experiments. With a little help from her dad and me, she’s been able to tackle many of the activities, fostering teamwork and shared learning experiences. While the Magic School Bus Attracted to Magnificent Magnets Set is officially recommended for kids aged five and older, I do believe some of the more complex experiments might be more appropriate, or at least yield deeper engagement, for children aged seven and up – especially when it comes to independent exploration and recording detailed observations.
