Snap Ships – Build to Battle

Snap Ships Sabre XF-23 Interceptor -- Construction Toy for Custom Building and Battle Play If your child loves building sets they will love Snap Ships. This very clever modular building toy from Play Monster,  is easy to put together and doesn’t take long to assemble. It also gets kids away from Minecraft. Less screen time is always better!  Everyone knows the most beloved and famous modular building system in the world is LEGO building blocks. I am a huge fan of LEGO, and now my daughter spends most of her free time playing and building Legos.

Legos’ main selling point is you can make anything your imagination can come up with and with the different types of blocks and sets available, you can!

Where Snap Ships is very similar to LEGO, but with beautifully sculpted spacecraft parts that you can interchange with other sets.

Snap Ships was started in 2005 by Scott Pease and Jeff Swenty. The pair met at a Video game conference and both have worked on popular video games like Guitar Hero and the popular Tony Hawk video game series. Pease and Swenty decided to combine the idea with something they both loved and spaceships and Snap Ships were born.

In the beginning, the Snap Ships owners use to 3D print each and every piece. Their quality to detail is still there in the Play monster sets.

The main structure of Snap Ships is the square blocks that snap together making up the main structure. You then add the different parts to create the perfect spaceship fighter to defend earth.

From the position of the cockpit to the laser cannons’ primary positions to fuel tanks these are all the different components you would expect in a great spacecraft build.

Each model comes with two to three different building instruction manuals, but with your imagination, there’s no limit to the number of different designs you can come up with Snap Ships. Snap Ships can be mixed and matched with other sets, which is sure to keep you busy for quite some time.

My daughter and I made several designs with the two sets we own – the Snap Ships Forge Javelin M-02 Attack Speeder and the Snap Ships Tunnelweb K.L.A.W. Spider Mech.

In addition to the physical toy, Snap Ships also has a youtube series that chronicles the battle between the Forge and the Komplex.

You can find it here: Dawn of Battle Youtube series – https://www.snapships.com/#video.

There is also an interactive Snap Ships App at https://www.snapships.com/#our_app. From there you can watch the series, play the game, and find building instructions for so many different builds.

Snap Ships Quality

Overall the quality is very good. Some of the connections can get a little loose, but that’s the exception, not the rule. The packaging is really cool, and the tops can be used as a base plate so you can have a nice showpiece for your desk or bookcase especially for the collector.

Each set also comes with a cool micro-figure that can fit in the cockpit of the spaceship; however, they are very small so keep an eye on them! Otherwise, they can get lost or may cause a choking hazard, especially around young children.

For me, Snap Ships is a huge hit — I love the entire concept! It nails all the major toy needs including building, imagination, and replay-ability. The quality is decent and there is a lot of extra material that goes along with them.

My 8-year-old thinks they’re a smart idea too. The system works well and the tool, that comes with the sets, is very handy especially if you placed a spaceship part in the wrong place.

I love the core idea of this system of shaping the spaceships with linking blocks and it is also a collector item if you wish.

I found the instructions very easy to follow and a child can put together the sets in several minutes.

All-in-all it’s a great fit for the kid who loves building toys; even big kids will enjoy Snap Ships.
