Where to Stay in Toronto

Sheraton hotel

 

If you’re planning a staycation in Toronto, the Sheraton hotel is definitely a standout option for luxury, comfort, and convenience. Nestled right in downtown, the Sheraton boasts spacious, stylish rooms equipped with all the modern amenities you need for a cozy stay.

You can take advantage of a variety of on-site facilities, like a fitness center, an indoor pool, and a spa—perfect for unwinding and recharging. Plus, the hotel’s restaurants serve up a tasty mix of international and local dishes that are sure to please any palate. With its prime location, the Sheraton makes it super easy to explore the city’s top attractions, shopping spots, and entertainment venues, making it a great home base for your adventures.

Cambridge Suites

Our preference lies with Cambridge Suites, and we have had the opportunity to stay there on multiple occasions during our visits to Toronto. The personnel exhibited an exceptionally cordial demeanor. On-site dining is not available; however, they provide coffee and muffins in the morning. Upon our arrival, we were assigned a suite located on the 17th floor. However, due to the presence of wet carpet in the room, we were relocated to a suite on the 18th floor.

We were really impressed with the layout of the place. The living area was spacious and had a comfy couch and chair. The suite came with a wet bar that had a coffee maker, spoons, glasses, a fridge, and a microwave. We loved that the bedroom was separate from the sitting area, thanks to the double doors. The bathroom was well thought out too, with the tub/shower and toilet in a separate room, while the sink area had a nice big vanity and drawers for easy unpacking. The master bedroom had a flatscreen TV, just like the living room. Both rooms had room-darkening curtains, which were great for my daughter who was sleeping on the pull-out couch. The bed was comfy, though it did sag a bit where I slept. The carpet and wallpaper felt a bit old-fashioned, and the hotel really needs a makeover since our last visit.

As for parking, there’s a fee for the garage, and if you have a big truck like my husband, be careful because it’s tough to maneuver in there. Our new truck got a little banged up while parked in the underground lot. The parking facility does allow in and out privileges for a fair price, and we were able to leave our truck there until 2 PM the next day, even though we checked out before 11 AM.

I’d definitely consider staying here again if I’m back in Toronto.

Casa Loma, built in 1911 for financier Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, is currently recognized as a significant heritage location. It serves not only as a well-visited tourist attraction, but also as a sought-after filming location for various movies and television shows. Roam around the magnificent great hall, perusing the vast array of 10,000 books in the library situated on the main floor. The castle boasts an impressive 98 rooms, one of which features a bathroom complete with a full-body shower, a groundbreaking innovation at the time of its construction. Examine the sophisticated suites located on the second level. Ascend the numerous narrow staircases leading to the summit of the gothic towers. The Castle Loma tower hosts the Castle Loma Escape Series, providing an opportunity for guests to collaborate in solving an immersive and dramatic mystery experience.

 

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada

Constructed in the latter part of 2013, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada displays 16,000 marine creatures, 450 diverse types of fish and invertebrates; it stands as the biggest indoor aquarium in Canada, containing 5.7 million litres (1.5 million gallons) of water and accommodating the largest assortment of sharks in North America.

Ripley’s Aquarium features several interactive stations that allow children to engage with different marine creatures and gain knowledge about them.

We spent approximately two hours at the aquarium on both our recent visits.

The aquarium is stunning in its own right, providing a truly immersive experience, particularly for those with a passion for the ocean. It was a must-visit spot on my daughter’s list of things to do. Due to the high volume of visitors at Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, it is advisable to buy tickets online in order to minimize waiting times in long queues. Visiting the aquarium after dark provides a delightful opportunity to explore the exhibits while also enjoying discounted admission prices. The aquarium is divided into nine distinct galleries: Canadian Waters, Rainbow Reef, Dangerous Lagoon, Discovery Centre, The Gallery, Ray Bay, Planet Jellies, Life Support Systems, and the Shoreline Gallery.

During our visit, the Shark Lagoon was a standout attraction, particularly for my daughter who had been eagerly anticipating it. The Dangerous Lagoon creates a mysterious atmosphere with its dim lighting and haunting background music. The highlight of the Lagoon is the glass viewing tunnel equipped with a moving walkway that allows visitors to observe sharks, saw-fish, sea turtles, and moray eels up close. It is truly awe-inspiring to witness these ocean predators in their natural habitat. Walking through the tunnel with these majestic sharks swimming alongside was an unforgettable experience for us, making it our favourite exhibit in the aquarium.

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is situated at 288 Bremner Boulevard, adjacent to the Rogers Centre and the CN Tower in the heart of downtown Toronto. CN Tower

Reserve your upcoming Toronto staycation at the CN Tower in Downtown Toronto. While some may find thrill in participating in the CN Tower EdgeWalk without having to venture far from home, we chose not to engage in the activity. Instead, we enjoyed the breathtaking panoramic vistas of the city from the CN Tower. The experience, though pleasant, comes at a high cost and can be quite crowded. The elevator ride up to the tower is notably cramped, reminiscent of sardines being packed in a tin.

Although a security check is conducted before entering the premises, visitors are permitted to bring food and beverages with them.

City Cruises Toronto

A highlight of our Toronto  staycation was undoubtedly the Toronto Premier Dinner Cruise aboard the Odyssey in Toronto Harbour, which provided a delightful experience. This marks my second experience with City Cruises Toronto, and it certainly met my expectations.

City Cruises Toronto is a popular choice among travellers from various parts of the globe. During our Toronto Staycation we had the pleasure of meeting a delightful couple from California who were celebrating a birthday, as well as a lively individual from Bowmanville, Ontario, who was also marking her special day.

The conditions were ideal and the journey on the boat was exceptionally calm. Experience an unforgettable evening at Toronto Harbor, complete with a delectable dining experience, stunning scenery, and lively DJ entertainment. Indulge in a meticulously crafted plated menu prepared by a skilled chef, accompanied by exceptional service, all while taking in the breathtaking panoramic views of Toronto’s skyline from the comfort of a climate-controlled deck.

The boat was stunning and we thoroughly appreciated the city lights. Our server was exceedingly friendly, delivering the finest service I have encountered from a server. Despite the extended wait for our meal, the food was exceptional.

The boat exhibited exceptional cleanliness, with a staff that exuded warmth and hospitality, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The cuisine was not only impressive but also tantalizing. Without a doubt, we intend to embark on another voyage aboard this specific ship in the future.

Toronto Parks

Setting out to discover each of Toronto’s local parks while on a Toronto Staycation is a fantastic idea! We had the opportunity to explore the Berczy Park Dog Fountain located in Toronto. This charming fountain serves as a homage to the city’s canine companions. Among the 27 canines showcased on the fountain, solely a single one possesses a designated title – Smiley, the golden retriever, christened in honor of a visually impaired therapy dog that collaborated with the St. John’s Ambulance therapy organization in Toronto. Observing individuals capturing photographs near the fountain, strolling with their dogs, and engaging in conversation is a soothing experience. Following a visit to the park, one can explore Lawrence Market in Toronto, a vibrant marketplace offering organic produce, restaurant vendors, and antique shops. It is advisable to avoid visiting on Mondays, as the market is closed. This information was discovered after our visit to the market.

 

Allan Gardens

Located in the Garden District of Toronto, Allan Gardens is an urban park and conservatory. The conservatory, an exquisite architectural structure constructed over a century ago, houses a variety of tropical plants and exotic flowers within its walls. It also includes a few turtles in the orchid section. The site is open to the public and does not require any fees, providing an opportunity for individuals to enjoy its splendor every day of the year. Allan Gardens can be found at the intersection of Jarvis and Carlton Streets, situated between Sherbourne Station and College Station in the central area of Toronto. During a bright Monday morning at Allan Gardens, there is minimal engagement from nearby residents. Unbeknownst to us prior to our visit, there exists a makeshift home within Allan Gardens. Deeper into the park, a massive teepee stands erected, serving as a designated space by the City of Toronto for First Nations, Inuit, and Metis groups to conduct Sacred Fires. Regrettably, the park is presently inaccessible. It was only upon our exploration of the indoor botanical garden that we discovered that the park was being utilized as a homeless encampment.

Nathan Phillips Square

During our recent Toronto Staycation, we frequented Nathan Phillips Square, a lively and bustling area located opposite the Sheraton hotel. This public space attracts a significant number of visitors annually, with over 1.8 million people attending various community gatherings and special occasions. One particular event that we participated in during our stay was the Taste of Vietnam Toronto. The annual festival, The Taste of Vietnam, highlights the splendor of Vietnam through its cuisine, cultural expressions, and artistic endeavors.

 

Things to Do with Kids in Toronto

 

When visiting Toronto with children, the city presents a wealth of attractions and activities. Canada’s Wonderland is a must-visit destination for families seeking wholesome entertainment that caters to both children and adults alike.

• Gain insight into Toronto’s railway history at the Toronto railway museum, which features both indoor and outdoor exhibits and is conveniently situated near the CN Tower. Children can take on the roles of conductors and engineers through interactive exhibits and train simulations.
• Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto offers an interactive experience designed for families. Geared towards children and their parents, this historical village allows visitors to engage in a hands-on exploration that vividly portrays the past.
• Legoland Toronto, is widely regarded as one of the premier family-friendly destinations in the city, particularly for children who have a fondness for Lego. We suggest that you secure your Legoland Toronto tickets in advance through online booking to ensure priority entry.
• Riverdale Farm offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Situated in the heart of Toronto, this unique urban farm provides an opportunity for children to interact with farm animals, discover historical buildings, and gain insight into farming techniques on its expansive 7.5-acre working farm.
• Ensure you visit Toronto Centre Island to fully experience all that it has to offer. The amusement park at Centre Island is designed to resemble a town from the 1900s, featuring a miniature train that takes visitors on a tour of the park. The attractions are primarily geared towards children who are 12 years old and younger.

The Museum of Illusions

The Museum of Illusions’ small size left me feeling dissatisfied, particularly after viewing the deceptive photos online. The gift store offers a variety of distinctive gift options for children that are sure to captivate their attention for extended periods. Regrettably, the museum did not meet the needs of older individuals or those with disabilities like my daughter. The entire exhibit was finished within a mere five minutes, leading me to believe that the expenditure was not justified. The employees were also uncooperative. I suggest considering saving your funds and exploring alternative options in Toronto.

Little Canada

 

Little Canada serves as a communal space where both residents and visitors can come together to exchange their narratives and express their affection for Canada, all within a single venue. After a decade of development, Little Canada was inaugurated for public access in August 2021, located at 10 Dundas St. East, directly opposite Yonge and Dundas Square.  The intricacy of the details is bound to astonish you. Little Canada emerged as my preferred attraction in Toronto. The small-scale representations of Canadian cities exhibit a high level of craftsmanship. At present, six Little Destinations have been finalized, which include Little Niagara, Little Toronto, Little Golden Horseshoe, Little Ottawa, Little Petit Québec, and Little East Coast.

The Toronto project, which required over 35,000 hours for its design and construction, features various elements such as GO Transit trains, Union Station, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto City Hall, helicopters, streetcars, the Don Valley Parkway, and the Gardiner Expressway. The Rogers Centre replica, built for $60,000, measures 5 by 5 feet (1.5 by 1.5 m) and features a working retractable roof. It even has a scoreboard that displays highlights from the Toronto Blue Jays game from the day before.

Spanning an area of 720 square feet, Little East Coast showcases prominent provincial landmarks such as the Bay of Fundy and Cape Breton Island, where travelers along the renowned Cabot Trail can appreciate the vibrant autumn foliage. Additionally, the destination features remarkable sites including Gros Morne National Park, Green Gables and Confederation House in Prince Edward Island, Pays de la Sagouine and Metepenagiag Heritage Park in New Brunswick, as well as Peggy’s Cove lighthouse, the Bluenose II in Nova Scotia, and Signal Hill, St. John’s Harbour, and L’Anse Aux Meadows in Newfoundland.

The intricately designed and engaging miniature exhibit presents breathtaking landscapes, captivating auditory environments, and dynamic elements, including moving vehicles such as cars, trains, and boats, all functioning within a 15-minute diurnal cycle. Within these sculptures, one can observe significant moments, such as a one-inch figure of Terry Fox immersing his prosthetic foot in the Atlantic Ocean at Little Canada’s St. John’s Harbour. During a notable event last year, Terry’s elder brother, Fred Fox, along with school ambassador Calvin, affixed the miniature Terry Fox to the national monument.

We were also afforded the chance to gain insight into the behind-the-scenes processes through which Miniature Makers animate our small nation. To complete our experience, we visited the Little Bites Café to indulge in some traditional Canadian cuisine and drinks. An additional point of interest for visitors is the chance to transform into a ‘Little Canadian’ by participating in a 3D scanning experience at the Littlization Station. Admission to the attraction includes a visitor guide and a scavenger hunt, encouraging attendees to focus on the elaborate details of the exhibits.

The park boasts several playgrounds for children and even houses a zoo. Visitors should be prepared for a considerable amount of walking while exploring the park.

Toronto Zoo

 

• The 50th Anniversary of the Toronto Zoo will be celebrated on August 15th, 2024. Founded in 1974, the Toronto Zoo has emerged as a prominent destination for families and individuals passionate about wildlife. Nonetheless, the extent of walking required is substantial. We incurred a parking fee of $15 and had to traverse from parking lot one to parking lot two. Numerous attractions were unavailable upon our visit, and the variety of animals present was noticeably diminished compared to previous visits. It appeared that there was an excessive amount of walking during which little to no scenery was visible. The animals that are observable are either resting in locations that are difficult to discern or are accompanied by indicators suggesting their absence.The visibility through the glass enclosures was significantly impaired yesterday due to their considerable dirtiness. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary, there were no special events taking place within the park. Additionally, the zoomobile offers limited views of the park and deposits visitors at remote locations. A comprehensive renovation of this zoo is essential. Frequently, upon departing from an attraction, I find myself contemplating a return visit during my next trip to the vicinity. Regrettably, this instance does not fall into that category.

Dining in Toronto

Toronto boasts an extensive array of culinary options that cater to every palate and budget.The city is particularly renowned for its diverse offerings, including Italian, Chinese, Greek, and East Indian cuisines. Enjoying a meal and refreshing beverages outdoors in the vibrant atmosphere of Toronto is among the most delightful experiences the city has to offer.

Poop Cafe

This is a café with a unique theme centered around feces, featuring confections designed to resemble poop emojis, oversized beverages, and vegan ice cream served in toilet bowls. A brownie shake typically costs approximately $15 each, with a serving size that is suitable for two individuals, although it may be considered excessively large for a single person. Patrons not only dine while seated on toilet bowls, but also consume food and drinks from urinals and toilet bowls. My daughter enjoyed herself, so I suggest bringing the children along. It is important for visitors to be aware that parking options in the vicinity are quite limited.

 

Steam Whistle Kitchen

The ambience strikes a balance between that of a café and a sports bar, offering both indoor and outdoor seating options. The service was average, and I found myself less than impressed with the attentiveness of our waitress. Notwithstanding the minor service disruption, the remainder of our experience during the visit was enjoyable.The dish of fish and chips featured a substantial portion of fish that was expertly prepared. The children’s menu appeared to have a restricted selection of options and was relatively expensive. The restaurant is strategically situated in close proximity to numerous attractions.

Chef’s Hall

For those who are more daring in their culinary explorations, the Sheraton is conveniently located near the gastronomic delights of Chef’s Hall. Although we did not eat there, we did take the opportunity to explore the interior and exterior.

Sunset Grill

Sunset Grill is the ideal choice for a satisfying breakfast experience, offering excellent food, generous portions, a welcoming staff, and efficient service.

The Old Spaghetti Factory

During our initial evening in Toronto, we had the pleasure of dining at the Old Spaghetti Factory located in Downtown Toronto. It is advisable to secure a reservation in advance. If you have not yet visited this establishment, it is highly recommended. Children will enjoy the antique carousel that is over a century old and the opportunity to have a meal inside a vintage streetcar. The Old Spaghetti Factory ensures that patrons are well-fed. I ordered the Factory Ravioli, consisting of Butternut squash, caramelized onion, and brie-filled ravioli, combined with cherry tomatoes and baby spinach in a rich Alfredo sauce. It was delicious. During my second visit to the Old Spaghetti Factory, I ordered the manicotti. The noodles were excessively soft and proved to be quite disappointing. My husband selected the chicken alfredo accompanied by mascarpone ravioli. The Spaghetti Factory prepares an exceptional ravioli. He graciously permitted me to taste some, and it was truly delightful. The service provided by our waitress during our second visit was likewise unsatisfactory. Nevertheless, I intend to visit the Spaghetti Factory during my next trip.

 

Dispatch Coffee

The café is situated within the Victory Building at the intersection of Richmond and Bay. The majority of patrons who visit for a cup of coffee are employed in the nearby offices. However, we decided to visit for an early morning breakfast before departing for our journey back home.We opted for a breakfast sandwich featuring egg and ham. The sandwiches are prepared fresh and then grilled in a panini press upon request. Although we did not sample the coffee, we did purchase one of the grab-and-go juices.

The York Street Keg

The York Street Keg can be found at the center of Toronto’s Financial District on York Street, just north of Adelaide. We dined at this establishment for a memorable dinner, marking the conclusion of our stay in Toronto and the anniversary of my daughter’s unfortunate incident. The steak my daughter ordered was perfectly cooked, and I found my hamburger to be quite enjoyable. The Billy Miner pie we had for dessert was absolutely delicious. Although the waitress was not very pleasant, the food itself was truly delightful.

The Eaton Centre is a vast shopping destination, housing a multitude of retail outlets and a large dining space. Located in the bustling downtown core of Toronto, the Eaton Centre stands as a prominent shopping destination in Canada, renowned for its size and iconic status. The Tenor, situated just a short distance away, can be easily accessed for exploration. Positioned opposite the Eaton’s centre, at a highly frequented junction in Canada, The Tenor stands as a multifaceted establishment encompassing retail, office, and entertainment facilities. Noteworthy features include a cinema, Little Canada exhibit, and a variety of dining options such as the shake shack.

Allocate your afternoon to a visit to Dufferin Mall, situated on the western side of Dufferin Street, just south of the Bloor Street West intersection, within the Brockton Village area. Dufferin Mall features a Walmart Supercentre, a variety of additional retail outlets, and a well-regarded food court. The mall is less crowded than Eaton Centre, which I found to be a favorable aspect due to its smaller size.

Wizard Market

For enthusiasts of the Harry Potter series, a visit to Wizard Market is highly recommended. This establishment offers a distinctive shopping experience, allowing patrons to explore a variety of merchandise associated with the Harry Potter franchise. The experience of browsing through the store and discovering its diverse array of items is truly enjoyable for Harry Potter fans. Our observations indicated that the small shop was remarkably costly, though my daughter did take away a few findings. Situated in close proximity to the heart of Kensington Market and Chinatown. It is important for visitors to recognize that securing parking in this area is not feasible.

 

To get around during your Toronto staycation, you can hop on the streetcar, catch an Uber or Lyft, take the subway, or just walk to nearby neighborhoods. One of the best ways to enjoy the city is simply by wandering the streets and soaking in the sights. Plus, the Toronto tour bus is a great way to get a full picture of the downtown area.
