More and more people are switching from coffee to matcha. While I’m not ready to give up my coffee just yet I did give 100% pure organic matcha green tea a try at the advice of my son, an avid matcha drinker.

What is Matcha Green Tea Powder?

Matcha green tea powder is the ground up leaves of green tea.  Trencha leaves undergo a very strict growing process. The plants are shade-grown for about three weeks before harvest. Unlike traditional green tea, matcha preparation involves covering the tea plants with shade cloths before they’re harvested. The dried leaves are then stone-ground into a fine powder.

Matcha Green TeaMatcha Tea Heath Benefits

One of the major health benefits of matcha tea is that you are getting a mega dose of antioxidants in every sip. USDA Organic Matcha green tea powder has over 1300 antioxidants, which is 137X more antioxidants than traditional brewed green tea. One glass of matcha is the equivalent of 10 glasses of green tea in terms of nutritional value and antioxidant content.

One study found that matcha contains three times more of the catechins called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) – an antioxidant linked to fighting cancer, viruses and heart disease – than other kinds of standard green tea.  Matcha also calms the mind and relaxes the body, enhancing ones mood and aiding in concentration. Matcha green tea has high levels of L-Theanine. Researchers have discovered that L-Theanine can help reduce stress levels in those who consume Matcha.

Because matcha green tea is a very strong antioxidant, it is recommend that you have something on your stomach before consuming large quantities of Matcha.

Matcha green tea supports weight loss

Matcha blocks the ability of digestive enzymes to break down fat, a step necessary for fat to enter our cells. Instead of absorbing and storing the fat, it passes through the body. Matcha is also a powerful natural detoxifier capable of naturally removing heavy metals and chemical toxins from our body. Unlike many diet aides currently on the market, Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder causes no negative side-effects like hot flashes, increased heart rate or high blood pressure. It’s best to drink Matcha 15 – 30 min before a workout to enhance fat burning.

Caffeine in Matcha Green Tea Powder

Because you’re consuming whole leaves in matcha, you may get three times as much caffeine than a cup of steeped tea. However, matcha tea does not provide the jitters like coffee does, so it is the perfect alternative to coffee.

Matcha Green Tea Powder Review

Matcha Green Tea There is no denying the powerful benefits of Matcha green tea. Matcha tea is unlike any other tea available, and its health benefits are quite impressive.  With so many brands of matcha on the market, which one should you purchase? Higher quality grades deliver a smoother taste, and a generally less bitter taste. It’s wise to first look for the country or region of origin. Higher quality matcha comes from Japan.

I recently tried 100% Pure Organic Matcha Green Tea powder from Macha Organics. The company takes extreme pride in the quality of their products. Their products are tested for lead and radiation poisoning, not once, but twice. First it is tested in the country it’s manufactured in and again in the U.S.A.  The tea comes in two forms: culinary and ceremonial. Culinary Matcha Green Tea (made in China) is the perfect powder to add to smoothies, baked goods and lattes. Premium Ceremonial Matcha Green Tea is a high grade tea made in Japan.

The 100% Pure Organic Matcha Green Tea from Macha Organics is a nice vibrant green. Lower quality matcha, is normally yellowish/brownish in hue. The feel and texture of the powder itself is smooth and silky.  As for taste,  matcha is somewhat of an acquired taste. To appeal to my palate – I added steamed milk to mask the somewhat bitter taste.  However, my son drinks matcha the traditional way. He simply pours hot water over the powder, froth it (either with a bamboo whisk or an electric milk frother), and drinks the thick tea. Matcha green tea did not aide in my weight lost  journey,  but I did find it gave me a boost of energy.

You can use matcha in mixed beverages such as morning smoothies,  and green tea lattes or you can use it as an ingredient in recipes.
