Dropping Hints: Letting Your Guy Know You’re Ready for Marriage (Quietly)
Many women start planning their wedding from the very moment that they’re old enough to play with Barbie dolls. You grab your Ken doll and a few other Barbies, and you plan out the perfect wedding day. As you get older, you begin looking in bridal magazines, cutting out collages of various rings, dresses, or flowers you might like to have. The only thing that’s missing is the perfect guy.
Now you’ve found the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. Things have been going well for a few years, and now you’ve got the “marriage bug”.
All of your friends are getting married and starting families, and you don’t want to be the last one on the list. So what do you do? Sit there and wait for him to come to his senses. No…that would take years as most men (not all) have that, “If it’s not broke why fix it?” mentality. So you drop hints, but not too many, as you don’t want to send him running for the door. Just subconsciously, almost subliminally, such as in the methods described below:
1. Leave Bridal Books Around
An age-old classic is the old bridal book trick. While your boyfriend may not pick up a woman’s magazine to read it for pleasure, he will most certainly notice if there are a lot of wedding magazines suddenly lying around. To make things even easier on him, you can leave the magazine open to a page with your ideal wedding ring on it. So if you’re interested in the new trendy black diamond rings, leave your web browser or a magazine open to a page featuring them.
This way you’re not actually telling him it’s time to pop the question, but you’re letting him know, “If you do want to ask me to marry you, you should probably pick up this ring.”
2. Talk to Your Friends About it
You’re probably wondering what talking to your friends has to do with subliminally getting your boyfriend to propose, however, there is a huge connection. If your guy is on the same page as you, (meaning he wants to propose), he’s going to go to your friends for advice on how to do it and what type of ring to get. If you’ve already told your friends what your hopes and dreams are, this takes the guessing out of things and you’ll get exactly (well maybe not exactly) what you want.
3. Accept Wedding Invitations
Sometimes, the most effective way to get something across without saying it outright is to put it all out on the table. If friends of yours are getting married, be sure to accept the wedding invitation. Since you’ll already be at the wedding, it won’t be weird if you start talking about your own hopes and dreams for a beachfront wedding (or whatever your wedding dreams might be). Your boyfriend gets to see how happy the bride and groom are, and how excited you are when you talk about it. Chances are by this point he’ll go ahead and start ring shopping.
4. Ask Him First
Okay, okay, so if you’re more of a traditionalist then this option may not suit your needs. It is also not a “hint” nor is it “subliminal” in nature. However, sometimes a girl has got to do what a girl has got to do. If you’ve been waiting for several years without so much as a discussion about marriage then maybe you should take the first step. To find the perfect ring, plan a special night for the two of you and pop the question yourself. This is a bold and daring move so if you’re going to do it, you’ll probably want to make sure that he’s at least somewhat on the same page.
So as you can see, there is more than one way to skin a cat, or in this case, get your boyfriend to pop the question. If he doesn’t get the hint with either of these options, it’s probably more than likely that he’s not ready to take it to that level. In this instance, you would have to discern whether he’s worth the wait, or if you’re biological clock ticking is starting to eat away at you. Hopefully, you’ll be on your way to marital bliss in no time at all.
