In the past July into August, I had the opportunity to travel to Niagara Falls with my eldest daughter as her caregiver. It was my first visit to this majestic natural wonder, and her second. As we embarked on this adventure, we discovered not only the breathtaking beauty of the falls but also the many attractions and activities that the area has to offer. In this article, I will share our experience, from getting there to exploring the falls and beyond, and provide some tips and recommendations for those planning a visit to this awe-inspiring destination.
How to Get to Niagara Falls:
Our journey to Niagara Falls began with a scenic train ride on Via Rail from Belleville to Toronto. Upon arrival in Toronto, we hopped on a Megabus, which conveniently took us directly to Niagara Falls. The entire trip, including the train and bus rides, took approximately 5 hours.
Our Niagara Home Base and the Great Outdoors
Our accommodation for the duration of our stay was the Fairfield Inn, a choice that proved to be strategically brilliant. Its location was impeccable, placing us right in the heart of the action, yet slightly removed from the most intense hustle and bustle. A short, pleasant walk brought us to a cluster of popular dining options, including the ever-reliable Denny’s Restaurant and the hearty Chuck’s Roadhouse, alongside a plethora of other eateries catering to every craving. This proximity was a godsend, especially after long days of exploring during a heatwave.
More importantly, the Fairfield Inn was within easy walking distance of Clifton Hill, the vibrant entertainment district of Niagara Falls. This meant we could spontaneously decide to explore, catch an evening attraction, or simply stroll amidst the attractions without needing to worry about Lyft- transportation. The convenience afforded by our hotel’s placement significantly enhanced our flexibility and enjoyment, allowing us to truly embrace the dynamic spirit of Niagara Falls.
Experiencing Niagara: From Heights to Depths
For an intimate encounter, nothing quite compares to getting up close to the falls on a boat tour. We eagerly boarded the Hornblower cruise on the Canadian side, donning our provided ponchos with a mix of excitement and trepidation. As the boat ventured into the mist-shrouded basin, the roar intensified, and the air grew thick with spray. Standing on the deck, feeling the raw power of the Horseshoe Falls just meters away, was an absolutely unforgettable, almost primal experience. The sheer force of the water, the deafening thunder, and the enveloping mist created a sensory overload that truly conveyed the majesty of nature.
To truly grasp the magnitude of Niagara Falls, one must experience it from various perspectives. Our 2nd essential pilgrimage was to Go to the Top of the Skylon Tower. Ascending this iconic observation tower offered a breathtaking panoramic vista, not just of the three falls in their full glory, but also of the winding Niagara River, the surrounding cityscape, and even glimpses across the border into the United States. From this vantage point, the immense scale of the natural wonder became even more apparent, a vast canvas of water and mist stretching as far as the eye could see.
Popular Attractions:
In addition to the falls themselves, Niagara Falls boasts a variety of attractions that cater to all interests. One of the most popular is the Bird Kingdom, a 4.5-acre indoor aviary that houses over 400 birds from around the world. Another must-visit attraction is Clifton Hill, a bustling entertainment district featuring attractions like Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium, Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks, and the Niagara SkyWheel.
Combo Tickets:
To save money on attractions, we opted for a three-way combo ticket that granted us access to three popular attractions: Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Odditorium, Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks. This cost-effective option allowed us to explore these attractions at our leisure without breaking the bank.
Oakes Garden Theatre:
Nestled in a serene setting, Oakes Garden Theatre is a hidden gem worth discovering. Established in 1937, this picturesque park offers stunning views of Niagara Falls, as well as formal gardens, ponds, and a colonnade. It’s the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a peaceful moment amidst nature’s beauty.
Where to Eat in Niagara Falls
After a day of exploring, we were ready for a delicious meal. One of our favorite dining experiences was at The Secret Garden Restaurant, located at 5827 Niagara River Pkwy. This family-owned eatery boasts a patio with views of the falls and serves familiar American food with a touch of local flair. The restaurant also features a gift shop offering a wide selection of souvenirs.
For a more upscale dining experience, we highly recommend Watermark Fallsview Dining. Located in the Hilton Hotel, this restaurant offers breathtaking views of the falls and serves a variety of delicious dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
How Long Does it Take to Visit Niagara Falls?
The amount of time you’ll need to fully explore Niagara Falls will depend on your interests and the activities you plan to do. We spent tfour days in the area, which allowed us to see the falls, visit several attractions, and enjoy some leisurely meals. If you’re short on time, you can still see the main sights in a day or two, but you may need to prioritize your activities and skip some of the lesser-known attractions.
What to Do Near Niagara Falls?
For those looking to venture beyond the falls, there are plenty of activities and attractions in the surrounding area. Some popular options include visiting nearby wineries, and exploring the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

A crucial piece of advice, especially given our July/August visit: book your activities in advance! Niagara Falls is incredibly popular, and attractions can get quite busy, leading to long queues and potential disappointment if you don’t plan ahead.
