Why You Must Start Small When Making Healthy Choices

Healthier choices don’t happen overnight. They’re a conscious pattern of behaviours, where you aim to swap out a less healthy habit for something that’s much better for you! Whether that’s changing your diet, going for a few more runs during the week, or simply being more honest about your feelings, making a healthier choice takes time and effort!  And that’s why so many people lose patience with the healthy habits they’re trying to build. They can’t just suddenly become healthier, or actively change their brain chemistry in a matter of minutes. Baby steps are a must – let’s explore the reasons why in a bit more detail below.

1. So You Can Get Used to a New Habit

Like we said above, there are no sudden swaps when it comes to healthier choices. You can’t just make a u-turn on a ‘bad’ habit you’ve earned over the years. It also took a little while for the unhealthy habit to set in – and that’s something a lot of people don’t quite remember!

Habit forming takes effort, and you don’t want to overwhelm yourself. You’re trying to change the less healthy, easier habit for something that takes a bit more ‘get up and go’. If you try to change things all at once, you won’t give yourself the transition period you really need.

New habits need some space to settle in. Break them down into small parts and take them on one at a time.

2. To Make Healthy Choices Far Less Exhausting

Let’s face it: Trying to do too much at once is exhausting. If you’ve ever vowed to “quit sugar in your coffee cold turkey” or “get in the best shape of your life in 30 days,” you know how quickly those efforts can implode. Sudden, drastic shifts often lead to burnout—and we’ve all been there when life throws you a curve-ball and your 7AM workout plan gets derailed.

Take quitting smoking, for instance. Going cold turkey is tough, but gradual alternatives—like using a vape to reduce nicotine intake might be easier. Try visiting a vape shop. Get some advice on which flavors and strengths are best for you, and gradually reduce your tobacco use. Similarly, if you’re new to strength training, begin with body-weight exercises before adding weights.

Pro Tip: Pair new habits with existing routines. For example, do a 2-minute stretching routine while brushing your teeth. Linking small actions to daily habits boosts consistency without adding stress.

Remember, Baby Steps Lead to Progress

Why You Must Start Small When Making Healthy Choices

Baby steps take you from point A to point B more surely than massive strides or leaps will! Striding will tire you out, and leaping can land you way off the mark! Baby steps help you stick to the path you’ve set yourself, even if it takes a bit more time to get to the destination.

Slow yet steady progress helps healthy choices bake into your brain. They start to feel more natural, less effortful, and you’ll have more time to notice the positive changes on your mind and body. Don’t give up on your healthy choices. Stick to them, take them slowly, and have a bit of patience with yourself.
