Do you post your poetry on your blog, website or any open forums? If you do are you aware that some publishers may consider your poem to be already published? Therefore you will not be able to claim first rights to it and most magazines; newspapers etc will not accept it as submission. _________________ Rose DesRochers World Outside My Window|

Rose, I am aware of that and do, as you are aware of. My question is, if I or others would like to attempt at getting what we've put on the web sites published into a book form, could we just remove those poems, stories from our sites, before attempting that or is it a lost cause and just accept our free offerings to the public.
I'm just curious. I had wondered about that for a while, but not really ready to pursue that journey. I still have lots to learn and write about.

Hi I've just signed up. And I would just like to verify if the works we submit here is immediately copyrighted. Thanks. |

I just asked a question about submitting a poem before I read this. I don't understand this entirely.
Why if it is on my website, would I not be able to claim rights to it and use it in a book or publication? Does that mean that anything I write and use on my website can't be compiled into a book? If so, then do I need to keep the "book" material seperate and wait until I get it copywrited before using it?
And what's to stop others from taking my stuff and using it for their own book or publication? |

River, In some cases, magazines will consider a poem posted on your website or in an open community as published. Therefore, they will not be able to claim first rights to it and most magazines, newspapers, etc. will not accept it as a submission.
This will of course differ from publisher to publisher, and it is a very gray area.
I suggest if you are submitting work that has already appeared on the web (Your website) for publication, mention in the cover letter the forums or site where the poem has been posted and let the editor make an informed decision.
There is nothing stopping others from copying your work. That is why I recommend that you register your poems with the copyright office.
Zam, your poetry is immediacy copyrighted the moment you write it. You retain the copyright to your poem when you submit it here, but by submitting it, you give us the right to archive it, in your name. _________________ Rose DesRochers World Outside My Window|
