Hello Todays-Woman.Net,

I shamelessly snatched a topic from another place, a place I shall remain unnamed. ;-)

I was wondering how many people here write about what they know best. Or if they even bother to do research prior to their writing, or during their writing of fiction.

I know that with my psychology major, I am using it to my advantage to get into character motivations. On top of this, I am also using it to even moreso flesh out what I cannot flesh out from personal experience: those who nearly have antisocial disorders, or are officially antisocial. In my psychology classes, I learned general patterns, as well as the exception to those patterns, in the development of antisocial behavior.

On a slightly unrelated note, I stress the difference between antisocial and asocial. Most people often confuse the two, the former referring to someone who has absolutely no conscience and is often considered selfish, the latter being those who are withdrawn socially.

I am also drawing information from reading other books. For instance, soon I am to receive the book revolving all around antisocial individuals, the criteria, what to watch out for, etc.

I also am incorporating some other things based off real life in my writing, trying to mask it all with a fantasy setting.

What about you?

Sincerely,
TheRadiantSeraphim

I tend to start out writing from imagination, then get into the research and work on suspension of disbelief as I go.

Like you, I have studied psych. That helps me IMMEASURABLY when I develop characters and their motivations.

I find that the subjects I write about tend to relate to myself and my life in one way or another. No so surprising, that. Mr. Green

I tend to write about things that are familiar but have a tendency to every now and them jump outside of the norm and usually when i go there i tend to do the necessary research behind it...

Ive spent a few years now constructing gaming worlds, characters, races, landscapes, powers etc, my hallway and spare room being covered in post-its about various things, places, people so extensive research is a definite must in this line of writing. As its all fantasy based...

But most times i just like to take a step back and write about things a little closer to home that have that personal feel to them or just write about what pops into my head...

If theres a story to be gleaned from it i'll do my best to put down on papper or on the screen...

When I do freelancing I tend to write about things I know. I have found myself writing a great deal about blogging as of lately and that has worked in my advantage. (Good topic) Wink

Most of my writings (poems, songs, plays, meditations) are based on my personal experiences with the people around me, or subject matters that capture my thoughts and emotions.

Sometimes, a strange thought goes through my mind (which can be a most interesting trip) and I will take the 'bait' and explore it's story. There are other times when I have something I want to write about and have thought its content out, but when I start writing, a greater force guides my words in a totally different direction.
