I believe christmas is commercialized. It's to involved around mp3 players, electronics, cars and etc; what happen to spending time with your family, and love ones?

Well like you have said, of course it is. Unfortunately I'm not sure there was a time when christmas was all about spreading love and joy, maybe that is just our sentimental view of the past. Of course they wouldnt have had commercials pumped into their brains 24/7 and maybe there wouldnt have been as many gadgets and "gifts" to give, so therefor they just spent mroe time doing real things with eachother. But yes, irrespective of how it was in the past, it is definately commercalised now, when they start playing christmas songs on adverts at the beginning of november saying, "Christmas is here!" I feel like smashing my head through the TV...

Well pink you already know my feelings on this. Of course Christmas is too commercialized, but then most holidays are now.

I agree.

Even Halloween is commercialized. Hells, almost any common concept is anymore, and not always with an in-depth meaning. There was a time when people feared dressing up as something malicious as the devil, and now people treat it like a joke - just to give an extreme example. Then instead of, in the case of Christmas, Santa Claus being more of a story and mystery, we have Santa Clauses in every corner of down town.

I think every holiday is going to be commercialized, especially in the West.

I can only imagine what Navaratri will be like once it becomes a recognized holiday in the United States.

Sincerely,
TheRadiantSeraphim

Excuse my asking, but what is that holiday? I've never heard of it!

It is commercialized to the max. Profit is king. Christmas didn't become a national holiday until 1870. Its gone downhill since then. Too bad we can't return to the Christmas of Charles Dickens. Goodwill and fellowship and not an MP3 player in sight!

Navaratri(the name literally means nine nights) is a Hindu celebration occuring twice a year to mark the advent of winter and the advent of summer.

"Nine Nights [of the Goddess]". It is a Hindu holiday, and some states are already in the process of recognizing it.

Different regions in India celebrate it differently, but they all got one thing in common: worship of the mother goddess in her many forms and the victory of Durga (Indian warrior goddess) over Mahishasura, the buffalo-headed demon. So the theme of good vs. evil is in there, too. (Good is essentially divinity, selflessness, etc and evil is selfishness, which is represented by asuras [demons] in the Devi Mahatmyam, a piece of literature based on praising the goddess as she fought evil.)

Sincerely,

This year instead of mailing our Christmas cards (locally) , the three of us,husband, 3 year old and myself drove around and sang Christmas carols to deliver our cards.
Christmas morning i buy a little cake and we sing happy birthday to Jesus before anything else goes on
We don't get into all that material stuff-it's too much!!!!
