Hi Everyone,
I signed up a couple weeks ago, and then dropped out of site. So I apologize for that. Thanks for all the warm welcomes.
One of the things that has always stopped me from writing and submitting it to the public is the fear that others will attack me and hate what I write. I'm not sure what I thought would happen if someone did this; maybe I would crumble up and die.
Well, it happened and I didn't crumble up and die, but I did almost cry.
Just a little backgound info; I'm trying to start my own home business. My long term goal is to write books and have a website that helps empower people to find their inner strength and create the life they've always dreamt about. Right now, to begin earning money, I'm working as an affiliate marketer.
I'm writing articles, with what I'm thinking is useful information and helpful, and wrote one about getting family back into the meal. Two people literally attacked it, said it was horrible, stupid, that my philosophy sucked, and were glad they weren't apart of my family. Those were the only reviews I got with my first article I put out to the public.
How do you get past that and keep writing? I've thought of their views and thought about how I can change it. But then again, should I spend my life changing everything I write to please others? I'm thinking that's quite impossible.
Anyways, my greatest fear came true, so maybe that's a good thing that it happened so quickly. Now I can move past my first rejection and be stronger with the next.

One thing you must remember---the art of writing like all art forms, is very subjective. What is beautiful to one reader is trash to another. I can't count the number of times I've read a poem and thought...WHAT???! , only to find other readers praising it to high heaven! We're individuals with very different tastes, as it should be.
Another thing to consider; its possible that the green eyed monster is rearing its ugly head. Perhaps those who attack your writing are envious. They may see something there that they wish they could emulate and, rather than comment favorably, they tear your writing to pieces. You'll never please everyone and, while its nice to hear kind words about your efforts, you only need to please yourself. If you change your writing to please a dissenter, they may be happy, but will you? Trust yourself. If you are pleased with what you've written, you're ahead of the game.

Two comments like that would hurt anyone. But chins up, you got someone's attention and that is what writing is all about. No matter how hard a writer tries, they can't please everyone. It would be nice if those who agreed with you had of replied. Writing is a scary thing, and hats off to you for being brave enough to step into the rink and proclaim the best way you knew how "I am a writer."

Good point, thank you. Another thing I need to consider is that my article was a means of promoting a product. I suppose a good way for another affiliate to get attention is bashing someone and directing people to go to their site instead.
My article, good or bad, has been in the first page of search engines for the past two weeks, and a few others have borrowed it and put it on their publishing sites. Most of them put my name and blog to it, but one person didn't.
I guess I over looked the fact that others have used it, and only focused on the rotten reviews.
As far as liking what I wrote. I do for the most part. It could use some improvements. But I guess that's all part of it. Good writers got good with time and practice. I think!

Something told me today to get back to this forum and talk about my experience. I'm glad I did. I was battling with myself today, thinking about how I'll never make it as a writer, and then telling myself to stop being silly. I even thought of other published authors and how some of them get fabulous reviews, and others get pretty bad ones. The ones with bad reviews still have books out there that are selling.
So thank you everyone for the kind words and encouragement.

Great attitude. Good or bad reviews are nothing but opinions. It is readers who show how good our writing is. All writers, even multipublished authors battle discouragment and fear. It's part of the journey. Welcome aboard.

Julie, don't let anyone tell you that you can not write. Not long ago I had the members of a well known writing community email another website, regarding one of my articles.
They sent 43 complaints so that the editor of the website would remove it. One of the letters stated," The article contained many typos, and I didn't feel the author communicated her ideas very clearly." When I received wind of this I contacted the editor of the website and she replied, “But I did receive no less than forty-three (43) emails complaining about the spelling errors and the grammatical problems. That's much higher than we are used to dealing with." "We generally don't receive complaint emails." “The members in the forum you pointed me to are now criticizing me and the quality of my sites." That should have been her first clue that this was nothing more than a witch hunt to get my article removed. She fed me to the witches instead of supporting me as a writer.
I have learned that the ones doing the insulting have no more of a reputation than you in this industry. Tell yourself "I am a writer first and foremost and I'll be damned if I ever let anyone tell me different."
As writers we help and encourage each other. We don't insult or belittle.
Here at Today's Woman some of the members have been my edited and you know, I'm so very grateful to them.

By the way Julie, I read your article. There were a few section I was revise and would be happy to offer my suggestions. I'm sure many members here would.
I submit to search warp another article directory and sometimes certain articles need a little help so they ask other writers to help out. I think that is great, because some of my own articles have needed that extra set of eyes.
If you ever need or want someone to look over something you wrote, just ask.

| J for me it is VERY simple, you simply use the PAIN! Remember that each coin has two sides not one. Understand both, feel both and creatively you will explode! Well thats at least what I have found. If you keep the pain sharp and never let it heel it reminds you WHY we write and WHY you must conitnue...good luck! Post Lots...we folkd here are gentle! |

Just remember that all the great people of this world were first rejected! CONFORMITY ONLY LEADS TO STAGNATION! Be the rebel, bring the sword! The world will only be helped by new viewpoints! And never forget about the most important factor of criticism... the critic! They judge from their viewpoint so take it as that.

Thanks, I have decided I don't like the title, at least not the last part of it, and would like to change a few things about it. So any suggestions would be great.
I have written another article that I do like, and ezinearticles accepted it. I also posted it in another forum I'm involved that is helping me learn internet marketing and I got very positive reviews. What a nice booster shot that was. As are the comments here.
I think part of what hurt so much was the comment that they are glad they aren't part of my family. That's a very touchy subject for me, as I suffered a great loss in my family less than a year ago. So it hit very close to home.
I've got my confidence back thanks to all of you and others that are on the similiar paths as I am.

I think there is a right way and a wrong way to comment on an article, story, poem, etc. If a reader disagrees with something you've written and feels it necessary to make a comment, they can do so in a respectful manner. If comments are hurtful, spiteful or rude, they have no point and should be ignored. However, if there is something concrete and not just a matter of opinion, such as grammer, spelling or punctuation, is it wrong to comment?

I didn't post any articles here yet, if that is was you are referring to. The article that got insulted was posted with ezinearticles, and I am going to edit it because I don't like the title.
I guess it's time I begin writing here.
