How long should your story be?

Micro-Fiction up to 100 words.

Flash Fiction 100 - 1,000 words

Short Story 1,000 - 7,500 words

Novellette 7,500 - 20,000 words

Novella 20,000 - 50,000 words

Novel 50,000 -110,000

Epics and Sequels Over 110,000 words

Hey all sorry been busy selling on ebay ha ha. You are right on the nose with the length of stories. I tend to run mine a little to long depending on what I am writing. Ha ha.

fyi, there are many varying lists of word count breaks... that one's pretty short on the novel end... the optimum size for a first novel by an unknown writer these days is 80-100k... anything as short as 50k won't be taken seriously by most agents/publishers, unless you're well-known for something...

the most easily published size for short stories seems to be around 5k...

what you must do is check the guidelines of each publisher you hope to submit the work to, to find out what they want... it'll do you no good to query for a 55k novel ms to a publisher whose guidelines state nothing accepted under 80k... or a 7k short story to a magazine that only takes under 3...
