I have a dumb question. . . I write short stories, but I have trouble with plot.

Could someone tell me the basic elements of a short story?

Thank you.

Good points Rose. And i think the theme is very important. it needs to be introduced as soon as possible and held throughout the piece. Seen as it is only a short story, the "point" of it can be easily lost or written past in a myriad of things that dont really add to it.

I too found this useful. Often you don't even know how long a short story should be. At least we have the basics now.

I have always found POV to be REALLY vital to a short.

Plot rises from character, If your characters are engaging they will create conflict and therein lies plot
