As I write, I find that I am influenced constantly by what I read. Then I read my rough drafts back and I can tell immediately what I was reading at the time that I wrote that particular piece. As I write more, I am staying more consistently in one way of verbalizing things, and I believe that this is "my" style.
I was wondering two things:
1. How did you find your own writing style?
2. What was your writing style influenced by? |

I don't think I have a set writing style. I do like rhyming verses and trying to keep to certain rhythm patterns. But, I do not limit myself to always doing that. My poems are usually short stories on life and there are times when I need to convey a feeling that takes it outside the standard time frame of meter. I also like to go even farther outside the box with types of speach that represent the character(s) personal life style. I have even dabbled in animal sounds, not an easy one to bring across, those are better heard than read.
What I find interesting is that a lot of writers, myself included, bring their own life's experiences in what they write about, and I see that the comments here at TW usually reflect that. I don't always write about myself, but rather put myself in another person's place, and become their voice.
I am not sure if there is a writer who inspires me to write in a certain way. I just tend to write what I am feeling about on a topic or an experience, and try to bring it to life in a way I think it best represents the story. Sometimes, I just like to be off the wall and have fun with it.

I also find that what I read effects my style.... sone of the greatest influences on me has been John Connolly, Stephen King, Mark Billingham and alastair Reynolds.
But I also find that I do have a certain way of putting things.... I write very "proper" I suppose, but what I write about is insane. someone pointed this out to me as I wasnt even aware of it, and they said the contrast is quite good. but anyway... I tend to really put a lot into setting the atmosphere and making the image very vivid. I dont know whether I am becoming more consistant, but I suppose I shall see by reading back across all that I've done.
I agree with smitty that most of us seem to write about what we have experienced in life ourselves, just putting it into the mold of another person. At least I know that is what I do a lot.

I write a good amount from the heart, which is writing on feelings; lately I have been using new novelist a program I bought it helps me sort out my characters, the world they live in, and such. It has been a helpful tool for that purpose, but I still tend to write on the fly or by the seat of my pants.

When I'm under the influence of my muse I stay away from the writings of others.
It's an ironclad agreement I have with myself and it helps ensure that it IS my own style.
I once had a boyfriend who had the TV on, songs playing on his laptop and he was playing an ongoing computer game and wondering why his writings dried up so fast.
I had to get rid of him to to have some thinking silence.
What helps me is to put on some background music. I might have to try several but sooner or later I find one that opens me up like a can.
If it's one particular song I'll put that song on repeat until the writing vein runs dry.
Experiment around and find what works for you. |
