What is copyright?
The legal protection given to authors which protects them against unauthorized copying of their work.
When does copyright occur?
Copyright protection exists from the time the work is created in a fixed form.
I noticed that many of the poems on this site have a copyright. Does this mean that they have been published somewhere else?
No, when you see the symbol © it tells you that the poem is copywritten and you should obtain permission if you wish to use it.
Does it cost money to copyright ones work?
There's usually a $30 filing fee to register a copyright. As stated your poetry is automatically protected by copyright as soon as you write them,
but in a case where someone infringes on your copyright then you need to be able to prove that you wrote those poems. This is where registering a copyright comes in handy. See http://www.copyright.gov/
Does putting a poem on this site mean that later I will not be allowed to publish it?
We are a closed forum, therefore posting your poem here is considered a work shop item. You will still be able to publish your poem else where.
