Should Courts be tougher on criminals? I'm thinking that here in Canada and the US the sentencing system is pathetic. Criminals convicted of serious crimes are being given a slap on the wrist and put under house arrest. House arrest? No jail time? Give me a break here! It is sad when we have criminal running free.
Two men were racing in their parents' luxury cars in Toronto when they crashed into a taxi driver. That driver is now dead because some spoiled rich men decided to drag race and what do the men get? House arrest!
I was also reading a teen already under house arrest and wearing an electronic ankle bracelet is now charged with raping a neighbor? Oh yeah, that house arrest did wonders. The ankle bracelet did not signal that he had left his house.
Wonderful, the courts are grounding people convicted of violent crimes. Earlier this year a teenager was killed as a result of a street race and was put on 6-month house arrest with his parents at home. I don't see justice being served in this case. A six month house arrest with a 10 year driving ban? The guy took a life!
What are your thoughts on house arrest and electronic monitoring? _________________ Rose DesRochers World Outside My Window|

| House arrest is fine when it's appropriate. For one thing, it allows the person to go to work (or school); assuming a person is safe to have in the community at all, it's better to have him or her working (or going to school to prepare for work), supporting any dependents, and paying restitution. I'd say the main criterion for house arrest instead of prison should be whether the person accepts responsibility for his/her criminal actions and is willing to make ammends. Why should we pay to keep a someone in prison, and perhaps support children as well, if the person is willing and able to work? Also, there are systems that will set off an alarm if a person leaves. In the case of the person who raped his neighbor, I'd question whether an appropriate evaluation was done before he was put on house arrest. In cases of manslaughter (but not premeditated murder), I think there are times when spending the rest of one's working life paying into a trust fund for the family (or some suitable charity) is better than having the rest of us support the person in prison. |

I would do away with house arrest. Reason being, my cousin was arrested and was going to jail for selling drugs and MUCH MORE. Nobody in the familly bailed her out but some lady did. My cousin has already breached her house arrest. To be totally honest, and this may sound harsh, I think they should do away with it. It is like having a party everyday at home because there are no bars, no inmates, etc. Sounsd harsh but some need harsh to hit reality before fantasy kills them.
