Most of you have likely heard the 2005 story regarding an Oklahoma City mom who got tired of her 14-year-old daughter's poor grades, chronic school tardiness, and classroom back-talk. She had her hold a sign that read "I don't do my homework and I act up in school, so my parents are preparing me for my future. Will work for food." I applaud the girl's mom.
Do you believe in public punishment for teens who misbehave?

LOL!! I would love to have seen this!! I guess it depends on the child,to start with why was she allowed to grow up not doing what she was told to do in the first place or was she allowed to do whatever until Mom got wise?.She sure as the devil didn't get this way overnight. Sounds like she was spoiled and allowed to get by with most anything then Mom decided she wanted the perfect daughter.I would love to see this happen but can't you just imagine a street full of kids holding signs telling everyone of their disrespect and that they are problem children? Then there are the lawyers that would be coming out of the woodwork telling the children that they could sue their parents for causing them public humiliation and whatever other laws they have now "protecting" the children. My grandson won't wear anything but two very expensive kind of pants and his shoes cost $170.00! As far as I am concerned he can go barefoot before I will pay that kind of money.For his 8th grade Christmas present he wanted Cool Water Cologne for heavens sake ,$55.00 and he got it!!!His mom said he will only be young once and should have what he wants while he can get it!He is in college now and still gets pretty much what he wants.He is a good kid , does his work and studies hard but I still think it would be a problem if he couldn't dress the part to be with the group he hangs with.
I really don't think it would do much good to stand a teen out side holding a sign,they would probably laugh it off or throw it down and go back to whatever they want.
I'm glad mine are all raised but you know,I never had a problem like that with my children,they grumbled about what needed doing or getting up to go to school but it got done and so did all(or most) of the others that I knew.
A new age is upon us,glad I am getting old and glad I am not going through this because I would most likely be in jail.I never struck my children,they had respect and still do at 47 and 46 yrs. of age plus we are best friends.
These parents best wake up and smell the coffe,children learn by example and teaching them as they grow not after they are teens.

I once told my kids when they were in high school that if they ditched school ONE more time, I was going to go to their school in my pajamas, slippers, and hair curlers and follow them from class to class.
They stopped ditching.

| I like your style!! I broached this subject with a couple of friends at our car club meeting tonight and the general response was ( most of us are in our 60's) it would never had come to this if it was my child we taught them better.So--- I hope we hear from different age groups,the answers could be really interesting!!Theolinda |
