National Library of Poetry Exposé

Excerpt from ABC's

20/20 News Magazine TV program

The National Library of Poetry is also known

by the following names:
--International Library of Poetry
--Poetry.com

BARBARA WALTERS: Now, a nationwide contest . .

. you can almost guarantee you'll end up being published. Arnold Diaz dispenses some poetic

justice in tonight's "Give Me A Break."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ARNOLD DIAZ
(voice-over): Margaret answered this ad from the National Library of Poetry (a.k.a. Poetry.com),
an impressive sounding name . . . Margaret entered the contest and was selected a semifinalist.
She was surprised, but happy as a clam.
MARGARET BROUGH: I thought, "Well, maybe I'm
better than I think I am."
ARNOLD DIAZ (voice-over): However, Margaret began to think
something was funny when the National Library of Poetry asked her for money. Fifty dollars to
publish her poem, for her biography, another $20. She paid and the company encouraged her to
enter more of its contests, which she did. She was very ambitious.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ARNOLD DIAZ (on camera): Well, we at 20/20 are nobody's fool, so we came here to the Thomas

Jefferson Elementary School to conduct an experiment. We hoped it would show it, that even a

second grader can be an award-winning poet.

MISS SILIO (ph), Teacher: Who can tell us

what a poem is?

ARNOLD DIAZ (voice-over): Miss Silio's class hadn't studied poetry yet,

but the kids agreed to write a poem about their pet.

1st STUDENT: My dog has a black

tail. My dog saw a blue whale.

2nd STUDENT: My dog barks all night and all day. When we

leave the park, he wants to stay.

ARNOLD DIAZ (voice-over): We entered all the kids in

the National Library of Poetry contest. Would any of their rhymes be among those judged the best?

Well, what do you know? The answer was yes. . . . All . . . received the same letter saying we

have picked you. Out of the thousands of poems, we have chosen your notable work for publication.

The classroom was filled with jubilation. Then the job of breaking the bad news fell to me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ARNOLD DIAZ (voice-over): The so-called National Library of
Poetry admits [that] almost everyone who enters is selected a semifinalist as long as their poem
is 20 lines or less. At 50 bucks a piece, the thousands of poems crammed in each of its
anthologies brings in hundreds of thousands in fees. The company says it has tougher standards
for the finalists awarded cash prizes each year. But the real winner of the contest is the
company, that's clear. (on camera) So to the National Library of Poetry -- if you want to pay
them to publish their poems, they're willing to talk about how much it would take. But ask them
to pay you? Come on...
ARNOLD DIAZ and STUDENTS: ...give me a break!
BARBARA
WALTERS: OK. Stay with us. We're right on track. In just a moment, we'll be back.
HUGH
DOWNS: OK, give me $50 and you're a poet. Stay with us.
Yes Poetry.com is a scam site I
remember the first time I was notified about getting published and into one of their
"anthologies" but once I found out I had to pay that site was put on my list of places never to
go to anymore I later found out that no matter what you write it's published in their
"anthologies" they're out to make money by selling you their book my friend got his poem
published and then a few friends just wrote a line or two and it was published too so it's a
scam site just wanted to share my story with everyone
Gee, thanks
for posting this.
I happened to take this test -are you a poet, something like this.
At
the end was a request to post a poem. So I did. Months later, I
got a note from Poetry.com
advising me of how good my poem was, and yes,for $ 50.00, I can have a copy of the book with my
poem and that of 200 other "chosen"poets.
I didn't feel right about something, I never
responded.Then I received
an Editor's Award for my poem, again, teasing me about a book with
my poem for $50.00. Ignored this letter. Now, I signed up with their "sister"company- poets.com
to see my poetry published on line, and reviewed.
What a crap... no offense but they award
poet laureate status to anyone
who has written so many poems, you'd ba amazed at 7-10 year
olds
with this status.Such genius. While there are some very good poems,
it is sad that
scams like this proliferate. I guess thanks to naive
surfers like me.And I should know
better.
Thanks again for this information.
There is a thread
HERE[/b:
b0911d94e8]
with some information about Publish America.
I have
never dealt with them, but do know that a number of Todays-Woman members have had experience with
them. Unpaid and late royalty payments are among some of the problems. I believe the contract
has a clause that prevents you from publishing your work with any other publisher for seven (?)
years. These are problems that should not be associated with honest publishing
companies.
I am sure members who have personal experience with them will be along with
more information.
I wouldn't say they were a
scam but my royalty cheque was five bucks, my book was full of errors and I'm signed into a
seven year contract. Crying or Very sad
Dear friends,
I am covering my face here but peeking through my fingers while typing.
I found
poetry.com because I 'won' $1000 free gas. All I had to do was pick four of their
links/affiliates to win. (read my poem 'dufus', I am not very bright some times.) Laughing
Before I was finished I had applied for a credit card, bought 6 DVD's from a club, ordered a set
of cd's "Learn Spanish in a Month" and finally found myself on poetry.com where I had a chance
of winning $50,000!
All this for gas. I never made it to the end to win my gas although I
did have heartburn and indegestion after about 3 hours. That's the closest I came to free gas.
Every time I thought I was close, I was prompted to answer just one more, one more and YOU WIN!
What happens is, they flood you with a gazillion pop up windows. I had no idea which was the
first one and finally my pc locked up.
All was not lost because this poetry.com LOVED my
poem and wanted to....well you guessed it. I sent in a deposit for the book. Then was told by a
friend that it was sheeeeshaaash. (sheeeshaaash is Cindy language for sh*t) Okay, so I was a
little sad that it was a load of a balogna but it was over with. Not! I now am receiving
letters from their collections department demanding the ballace. Imagine That!
I should
write a poem about my expierence with them and enter in their contest. Very Happy
Hello Cindy, I have both a poem
and article on poetry.com. Winning writers sponsor a contest “Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest”, you
should consider entering. Full guidlines can be found on WinningWriters.
Thank you for your suggestion
of lulu but no thanks. It isn’t that I have anything against them. I have looked at what they
offer and not very interested. I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one of the books, to look at
the quality. I’m considering AuthorsHouse though.
Hmm. Funny that this
subject cam eup. I just bought two books from them..."Song of the Wayward Wind..and Other Poems",
by Margaret Reid and another ..."Anyone for Love", by John Howard Reid. Both are 8 X 10 paper
back. One is 54 pages and the other 128 pages. Both have black and white photos or drawlings to
accompany each poem. I have very much enjoyed them and found them both very good reading. Another
book that I recieved for free was a book called "Traveling"...this is a 151 page paper back
anthology of poems. Some of the authors I have recognized through many different sites that I
belong to. This anthology was published by Tom Howard through Lulu Press in spring 2005. The
poems range from many different types and many different lengths. It was a very enjoyable read.
This book also is an 8 X 10. Makes for a great gift for another poet lover. ( I think I should
have written an article about this!) Oh well!
I have researched Author House Publishing
and found that they are a worthy publishing institution. I am thinking of seriously going with
them with my next book.
I wasn't aware that you had a first book? Who did you publish it through? Jayel is published with Authors House. I just searched Amazon and there is no listing of your book. Where is your book listed, I could of gave you advertising. LOL I am almost positive that John was a member of Today's Woman at one time. John is sponsoring a contest right now.Tom Howard/John H. Reid Poetry Contest.
Helen thank you for the
clarification that your book was written 20 years ago under another name. Also you mentioned
Excellence in Poetry by Lavender Aurora. Lavendor Aurora is from Famous Poets Society. Which is
a part of poetry.com. Not a recognized credential by any means.
So was your book with a
traditional printer 20 years ago? Who was the publisher?
