Ode to my Mother- A Proverb

“The Mom of the Year Award is a celebration of the 9.2 million Canadian Moms who work tirelessly every day to provide for their family”. This is the celebration of my mother.
“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many woman do noble things, but you surpass them all.” (Proverbs 31:26-31)
The paramount in any household, the voice of reason and the eyes of truth, all leading up to mother hen’s feathered embrace. She is the pivotal point in my life, which is why I take the time to recognize my friend, my confidant, my mother- Rose DesRochers.
The chant of my youth, mimicked by many others, was six words and eight syllables. It was said in a mocking tone with antler shaped, waving hands, and completed by the infantile showing of my tongue; it went like this “my mother’s better than yours”; and I believed it- still believe it, and here is why.
I was birthed into my family eighteen years ago, the youngest of three siblings with the eldest being of four years. My mother was fairly young, twenty five years of age, having lost her second child when she was twenty three and losing her father when she was eighteen. She was rapidly becoming well versed with the harsh realities of the world and yet still remained a pillar within the family. She would run towards me at the sound of my incessant crying, bouncing me on her hip whilst rehearsing diction with my sister. I was the hospital prone child; waiting rooms were often a second world nursery during my youth and my parents quickly adjusted to my minor illnesses. Through that my mother divided her time to the household chores, a daughter with a speech impediment and growing learning curve, as well as her sick mother; she was the poster girl of perfection and asked for nothing in return- affection was the only form of payment in my household.
