The Sears Christmas Wish Book, A Holiday Tradition for 60 years

Do you remember when?
For almost 60 years Canadians have stood beside their mailboxes, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the annual Sears Wish Book. Since the first edition was published in 1953, the Christmas catalog has been capturing imaginations. I don’t know about you, but the Sears Wish Book was an important part of my childhood Christmas experience, just as it was for my children and I predict it will be for my
granddaughter who is due to be born March 2013.
When I was a little girl every year without fail the Sears Wish Book would arrive in the mail. The arrival of that magical book filled with toys started the beginning of my Dear Santa, letter. When my children were young I would be lucky if I actually saw the Sears Wish Book until several days after it arrived. When I did get the catalog back it would be helpfully bookmarked with creased pages, things circled and stars beside the items that my children really wanted. In my household, some things never change. Though my children are adults living on their own , items are still circled and pages still folded in the wish book.

Thankfully, I no-longer have to wait days to browse through the wish book. Mom is much wiser than she was in the 90′s. She now has two wish books, just in case ones goes missing. This year’s edition of the wish book features a beautiful commemorative cover that includes images of every Wish Book ever published. The book also features 736 pages of extraordinary holiday gift ideas. Read more…
