Sending greeting cards to friends and family is a tradition that goes back about 1910 hallmark card200 years. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, (not including packaged kids’ valentines for classroom exchanges), making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.

Hallmark first offered Valentine’s Day cards in 1913 and began producing them in 1916. Valentines pre-date Hallmark were among the first types of cards the company offered. A fire in 1915 destroyed the company’s inventory of Valentine postcards leading to the purchase of printing equipment so Hall Bros. (which later became Hallmark) could begin creating its own Valentines.

Today, Hallmark creates more than 1,400 Valentine’s Day greeting card designs.
