Outdoor and Indoor Fall Activities for Kids

Fall is a favorite time of year for many kids. It brings Halloween, carving pumpkins, football games and colorful leaves. There are many fun indoor and outdoor fall activities that children can participate in.

Indoor Activities

Pumpkin Carving

A favorite activity of fall is to carve pumpkins. Whether your pumpkin is short and fat or tall and skinny, there are pumpkin face designs available to suit your pumpkin. Many children like to design their own pumpkin faces as well or create masterpieces such as spiders, ghosts and witches. Carving can easily be done with the special pumpkin carving tools available in the Halloween section of many stores.

Roasting Pumpkin Seeds

When carving pumpkins, be sure to save all the pumpkin seeds. This is a great treat to look forward to once the carving is done. Be sure to separate the seeds from the pulp and strings by placing them in a separate bowl. Rinse them well and coat with a tablespoon of vegetable oil. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet, add salt and bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes. Stir occasionally while baking.

Outside Activities

Make a Scarecrow
Make one scarecrow or make a whole family. All it requires is some old clothes, twine, a pillowcase, paint, safety pins and leaves. Using twine, tie the ends of the pant legs and sleeves closed and stuff them with leaves. Attach the shirt and pants together using safety pins. Paint a face onto the pillowcase and stuff it with leaves. This can be attached to the shirt with safety pins. Add the final touch by securing an old hat onto his head.

Visit a Pumpkin Farm
Many pumpkin farms have special weekends set aside in the fall for their customers. These special events may include picking out and buying pumpkins, going on a hayride and running through a cornfield maze. You may also be able to buy items such as gourds, hay bales and apples.

Raking Leaves
Raking leaves is a chore that can be turned into a fun activity. Purchase some small rakes for the little ones. Teach them how to rake the leaves into a big pile. They may need a little help. Be sure there are no sticks or limbs in the pile of leaves to prevent the children from getting hurt.
