Keeping the Flame Alive, Not ExpensivePosted on Thursday, September 08 @ 01:09:00 CDT | Topic: Relationships Keeping the Flame Alive Doesn’t Have to be Expensive Often, people will groan when they hear the word “budget,” generally because it is billed as a financial strategy that is difficult to stick to. The truth is that budgeting can be simple. It’s a great way to keep one’s finances in line and still have fun, whether single or as part of a couple. Those who are watching their pennies might not often dine on lobster and French champagne or buy the latest and most popular technological gadgets, but fear not. It is possible to find deals on all sorts of adventures that will enable a couple to have a great time and not burn through their savings. Get arty A quick glance through a local newspaper, especially one that promotes the arts, will reveal information about inexpensive or free options for getting out of the house. Some events, like art exhibits or movies at a library, will be free or cost only a few dollars per person for admission. Additional options include chamber symphony performances, musical performances at the park, art gallery openings (sometimes billed as “First Friday” events), or classes at a local art store. Likewise, art centers may offer discounted or free chances to take a class and learn a bit about crafts like ceramics or photography. Go back in time A fun idea for having fun on a budget is to go on a “seventh-grade date.” Quite simply, this can include fun and “tame” activities like getting ice cream and browsing through a shopping mall whenever time permits. The budget conscious can also throw a movie into the mix. Ideally this would be a matinee to keep costs lower and preserve the innocence and integrity of those first forays into dating. Get outside Going for a run, bike ride, walk, or even camping are great ways to spend time together without having to scrape together a load of cash. Sitting on a park bench and people watching can be a great activity that will likely spark fun conversation. Around the house, couples might choose to grow a few vegetables, plant some perennials, or try their hands at container gardening, all of which will be great to show off at a backyard barbecue. Consider providing an entrée and invite guests to bring a dish to share, which will keep everyone’s costs down but allow for an entertaining time. It takes only a little research to find plenty of activities to try. It can seem like everything has a cost but the opposite is true. Finding affordable activities is easy and affords a couple opportunities to try on a new hobby for little to no cost. Whether a symphonic performance or a double-scoop cone in the park on a Saturday, find what works and keep those fires stoked. |
