With summer approaching the half-way mark for the northern hemisphere,
fashion trends have calmed and solidified, and accessories follow the same
pattern.
As projected, people are accessorizing to coordinate different outfits more
intently than ever. Inflation and high clothing costs make extending and
expanding looks high on the fashion priority lists.
Chokers and beaded tassels are very common among those who like making a
non-conformist presentation. Just don't tell them how prevalent the look is, and
everyone will be happy.
Fortunately, fringe is fading away, but cuff bracelets are here and comfortably
occupying their own space on many wrists and even ankles this summer. Paired
with bangle earrings, the fashion statement of “I'm here, and you know it” can
be calmed with delicate necklaces and rings.
Waist pouches have yielded way to belt purses for the fashionistas. When
upgrading one's appearance from tie-die t-shirts and scruffy jeans into
sleek-lined summer dresses and slacks, the belted purse presents a chic yet
secure profile. The fact that it also leaves both hands free—a detriment of
clutch purses—is a terrific bonus.
For those for whom belt purses just aren't large enough, unstructured purses and
bags in solid, neutral colors are still popular. Inner pockets and pouches for
quick needs are very acceptable, but avoid the outer pocket design. Think “sleek
appearance” when choosing this type of handbag.
Another blast from the past is the re-emerged cat-eye sunglasses. Bold and brash
in plastic frames, colors range from basic black to blue to yellow to red—and
everything in between. Rarely will one see a wire-framed shade set in this
style. The “in your face” fashion just fits with the wider frame made of
plastic.
For those wanting a more subtle accessory set this summer, fear not. Leather
belts are narrowing again, and so are watches. Charm bracelets are enjoying a
resurgence in popularity as well. Most are silver-based and coordinate well with
just about any look you want.
Custom jewelry trends show that large stones, except wedding sets, of course,
are fading for the time being. Smaller stones, whether real or synthetic, may
reflect the decreasing amounts of spendable cash during the recession, but bands
and braids bring variety to casual to elegant ensembles.
For men, the military look is still in, so the khaki ties, and the long, leather
straps on briefcases and laptop cases won't make you look like last year's news.
However, the military look may not last another few summers, so don't go
overboard with a new wardrobe to match. This look waxes and wanes with wartime
popularity, whether the US is involved or not.
A casual biker look is still eye-catching this summer. Just don't go too far to
the extreme on the heavy wallet chains. Sterling silver is good; thick bike
chains with notched carabiners are not.
