Internet Saftey: MySpace - Today

Today, May 8, 2006, MySpace.com boasts an online population of 83 million, 861 thousand, 1 hundred and 22. Since May 10th, 2006, it has increased 6 million, 756 thousand, and 59. that’s approximately 241 thousand, 2 hundred and 87 new subscribers per day.

Needless to say, MySpace is exploding. And with that comes, stories about sex, school plots, and other criminal cases. Below are 14 recent stories about MySpace. My Internet Safety Coach found these through a quick Google News and Yahoo! NEWS search, where there are thousands of stories pertaining to this popular Web site.
Although MySpace is the conduit for these crimes, in an effort to be balanced, we have also included news stories which are positive. As a result of the postings on MySpace, violent crimes were prevented and the culprit was apprehended.
It’s important to note that MySpace, while the largest, is one of thousands of sites criminals and unsuspecting kids and teens visit. The problem with MySpace is the numbers of subscribers that it attracts.

That said, if you know how to be safe within that environment, it is probable that you will not be victimized. A couple of safety tips are:

Safety Tip #1 – MySpace and the Privacy Setting:

If you are a MySpace user, or the parent of one, be sure that the privacy setting is used. That means that the people the user will chat with are people he/she knows. This is to prevent strangers from trying to join in unsolicited communications. If a stranger does want to meet someone who has a private account however, he/she can get to the private account user through one of their friends who don’t have a private account. For this reason, it is vital that whenever someone the user doesn’t know is trying to contact them, that they delete them just as quick as they try to come in. Also, on the bottom of every MySpace web page, there is a link entitled “Report a problem” that goes directly to the security department.

Safety Tip #2 - MySpace owns all of it’s subscriber’s content!

MySpace claims “ownership” of all pictures, words, audio, etc. that a member or user posts. One of the reasons MySpace owns the content is to assist law enforcement in the investigation and evidence of a possible threat or crime. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department also suggests that the reason for owning this information is because this data has monetary value as it pertains to commerce and buying habits. Corporations pay “data mining” companies for consumer information. When MySpace users go to commerce websites, the information of where they are going and what they are looking at, or if they are buying is recorded. Now, as it pertains to photos that teens post on MySpace, I don’t know what, if anything, will be done with that content. All I can say is: Nothing is private on the internet. Beware of what you post!

This was a very informative article, and I appreciate that you’ve written about the current news surrounding MySpace. I think the reason news surrounding the girl who flew to the middle east was an eye open for many parents & I read today that there is some controversy about advertisements advertising on the site because of recent news.

Hello Suzanne,

This is a very timely article because MySpace.com is a teen craze. Most parents are aware of the potential dangers. I have a teen daughter and was shock to find the information she broadcasted over the Net. It was corrected. It's important to engage our children. Parents need to stay involved with their children, even in the teen years. Your article provides useful information to keep them safe.

Take care,
