June 19th, 2012Maplelea Girls – A modest alternative to diva dolls
Maplelea Dolls would make a great gift for any young girl. Maplelea Dolls are similar to the American Girl Dolls, but the Canadian version. The 46-centimetre Maplelea girls were introduced quietly in late 2003 by Newmarket, Ont. toy and gift-ware company Avonlea Traditions.
Company president Kathryn Gallagher Morton designed the Maplelea Girls because she believed Canadian girls needed new role models of their own.
Canada’s Maplelea Girls dolls are dolls that go beyond play and become an important part of your child’s life by inspiring national pride while learning the wonders of their country. Bringing one into your home will provide your child with a friend for life.
Maplelea Dolls were created to provide an age-appropriate alternative to diva dolls that are mask marketed encouraging young girls only to focus on body image. Maplelea Girls, encourage creative play, promote a healthy lifestyle and good self-esteem for our youth as well as a knowledge and pride of the country we live in.
Meet huggable and lovable 10-year-olds who hail from across the country. There are six Maplelea Dolls, Taryn from Banff who is an outdoor enthusiast and environmentalist, Brianne from Manitoba, a small town farm girl with big dreams, Alexi from Toronto, a big city girl with ambitions of becoming an inventor, Leonie from Quebec City who loves birds and is passionate about hockey and finally Jenna from Lunenburg, NS, who loves the Ocean, sports, and having fun and Saila from Iqaluit – the capital of the Nunavat Territory in the northern part of Canada. Saila likes to go jigging – a form of fishing through the ice.. Each doll stands 46 cm (about 18″) tall and has a soft body with arms and legs that can be posed. Their eyes open and close and their hair is a delight to comb and style.
All of the Maplelea Girls arrive with a distinctive 64-page journal illustrated with doodles, photos and writings done by the doll character to tell about her life and the part of Canada she calls home. There is also room for your daughter to add similar information about herself.
Once your daughter has an 18″ doll of her own you’ll find that some of the most fun she’ll have is dressing her new friend in beautiful clothes. You may even want to go the extra mile and get your daughter a matching outfit.
A range of clothing and accessories that reflect each Maplelea Girl’s interests and personal fashion style are available for additional purchase, along with furniture and accessories.
I recently had the privilege of receiving one of these dolls for review. Jenna and journal arrived in a beautiful, sturdy decorative storage box that you can use to hold all Jenna’s accessories. It’s refreshing these days to actually get a toy that’s well made.
My friend’s daughter is 7 and she loves her new doll. I can’t get over how much Jenna actually looks like my friend’s daughter.
Each girl has a distinctive personality and interests, but they are all imaginative, adventurous and, most importantly, happy with who they are at this time in their lives. This line of dolls supports the “real” messages so many of us are trying to send to our young girls.
